✚ Kitchen First Aid Quick Guide
Quick reference only. Not a substitute for certified first aid training. All kitchens should comply with local workplace safety laws.
📞 112
Emergency Services — Call 112 (EU) or your local emergency number For life-threatening emergencies, severe bleeding, suspected fractures, anaphylaxis, or unconsciousness — call immediately. Do not delay.
⚠ Important: This guide is for quick operational awareness only. It does not replace certified first aid training. Ensure your kitchen has trained and certified first aiders as required by local workplace safety regulations. In Ireland, follow HSA guidelines. In Cyprus, ensure first aiders hold certificates renewed every 3 years by approved providers.
🔥 Burns & Scalds
1Cool immediately under cold running water for minimum 10 minutes
2Remove jewellery or tight items near the burn — before swelling
3Cover loosely with cling film or non-fluffy sterile dressing
4Do NOT use butter, ice, or toothpaste
5Seek medical attention if larger than palm, on face/hands, or blistering
🩹 Cuts & Bleeding
1Apply firm direct pressure with clean cloth or dressing
2Elevate the injured limb above heart level if possible
3Do NOT remove embedded objects — apply pressure around them
4Call 112 if bleeding is severe or does not stop within 10 minutes
5Cover with sterile dressing and blue catering plaster before returning to kitchen
😭 Choking
1Encourage coughing if the person can cough or speak
2Give up to 5 firm back blows between shoulder blades
3If back blows fail: up to 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich)
4Alternate back blows and abdominal thrusts up to 3 cycles
5Call 112 immediately if obstruction does not clear
* Modified technique for pregnant or obese persons — push on chest not abdomen
🚨 Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis)
1Call 112 immediately — anaphylaxis is life-threatening
2Use EpiPen if available — outer thigh, through clothing is fine
3Lay person flat, legs raised — unless breathing is difficult
4If unconscious and not breathing — begin CPR
5Stay with them until emergency services arrive
Signs: hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, dizziness
👁 Eye Splashes
1Irrigate immediately with clean running water for 10–15 minutes
2Remove contact lenses if present
3Hold eye open while rinsing
4Seek urgent medical attention for chemical splashes
🥞 Slips, Trips & Falls
1Do not move the person if head, neck, or back injury suspected
2Apply cold compress to bumps or bruising — not ice directly
3Call 112 for suspected fractures or loss of consciousness
4Record the incident in the accident log
🌫 Heat Exhaustion
1Move to a cool, well-ventilated area immediately
2Lay down with legs slightly raised
3Give cool water to drink — small sips
